Stromata effused-pulvinate, plane or with inconspicuous perithecial mounds, up to 4.5 cm long x 2-3 cm broad x 0.8-2.5 mm thick; surface dark brick (60), brown vinaceous (84), or chestnut (40); orange, dull yellowish brown, or dull orange brown granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments luteous (12), orange (7), or scarlet (5); the tissue below the perithecial layer black, 0.4-1.5 mm thick.

Perithecia obovoid, tubular, or long tubular, (0.1-) 0.2-0.3 mm diam x 0.3-1 mm high.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 113-173 mm total length x 4.5-5.5 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 54-87 mm long, the stipes 50-95 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.3-0.8 mm high x 0.8-1.5 mm broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid, nearly equilateral, with broadly rounded ends, (7-) 8-10.5 (-12) x (3-) 3.5-5 mm, with faint, straight germ slit much less than to nearly spore-length; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore smooth.
