Hypoxylon subcorticeum Y.-M. Ju & J. D. Rogers, A Revision of the Genus Hypoxylon, p. 184. 1996.

Stromata effused-pulvinate, plane or with inconspicuous perithecial mounds, up to 10 cm long x up to 3 cm broad x 0.6-0.8 mm thick; surface brown vinaceous (84), sepia (63), or chestnut (40); dull orange brown or dull reddish brown granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments honey (65), amber (47), or isabelline (65); the tissue below the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia obovoid, 0.2-0.3 mm diam x 0.4-0.5 mm high.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 175-205 mm total length x 10-11.5 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 80-105 mm long, the stipes 85-115 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 1 mm high x 3.5-4 mm broad.

Ascospores dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid, nearly equilateral, with broadly to, less frequently, narrowly rounded ends, 13-18 (-19) x 6.5-8.5 mm, with straight germ slit spore-length; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore smooth.
