Hypoxylon subcrocopeplum Y.-M. Ju & J. D. Rogers, A Revision of the Genus Hypoxylon, p. 185. 1996.

Stromata effused-pulvinate, plane or with inconspicuous perithecial mounds, 5.5 cm diam long x 1.2 cm broad x 2 mm thick; surface rust (39); orange red granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments orange (7); the tissue below the perithecial layer black, up to 1.5 mm thick. Perithecia obovoid, 0.2-0.3 mm diam x 0.3-0.4 mm high.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 190-210 mm total length x 6-7.5 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 80-100 mm long, the stipes 105-120 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 1-1.5 mm high x 2.5 mm broad.

Ascospores brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 11-15 x 4.5-5.5 mm, with straight germ slit spore-length; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore smooth.
