NOTES

Cultures and anamorph have been described by Abe (1986) [as H. hypomiltum] on PDA.

Hypoxylon subgilvum was treated as a synonym of H. hypomiltum by Miller (1961). Both are recognized as distinct taxa in this study (see NOTES on H. hypomiltum for clarification). Hypoxylon subgilvum differs from H. jecorinum in having a rustier stromatal surface, in having a Nodulisporium-like conidiogenous structure, and in having smaller conidia; differs from H. erythrostroma in having ostioles lower than the stromatal surface, in not having fusoid ascospores, and in having ochraceous sporulating regions in cultures; differs from H. rickii in having a smaller perithecial diameter and in having smaller conidia; differs from H. fendleri in lacking vinaceous tones on the stromatal surface, in having smaller conidia, and in having ochraceous sporulating regions in cultures; and differs from the smaller ascospore collections of H. crocopeplum in having smaller conidia.

Three Mexican collections [Campeche state, Escárcega municipality, "Ing. Eduardo Sangri Serrano" Forestry Experimental Station, 9.11.88, San Martín 1204, 1237, & 1499, wood (ITCV; JDR)] are different in having a rosy buff (61) to vinaceous buff (86) stromatal surface and in having pinkish sporulating regions, but otherwise are similar to the typical collections.
