Hypoxylon venezuelense Y.-M. Ju & J. D. Rogers, A Revision of the Genus Hypoxylon, p. 200. 1996.

Stromata pulvinate, with inconspicuous perithecial mounds, 1-8 mm long x 1-3.5 mm broad x 0.2-0.3 mm thick; surface sepia (63) or brown vinaceous (84); dull orange red granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments luteous (12); the tissue below the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia spherical, 0.1 mm diam.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 85-97 mm total length x 9-10 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 68-75 mm long, the stipes 14-25 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 1.5 mm high x 2.3 mm broad.

Ascospores dark brown, unicellular, fusoid to ellipsoid, nearly equilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, sometimes with one end pinched, (13-) 14-17 x 6-6.5 (-7) mm, with slightly oblique germ slit much less than spore-length; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore smooth.
