The carbonaceous stromatal layer that discretely surrounds each single perithecium (Fig. 3) has not been found in other members of section Hypoxylon, but is ubiquitous in section Annulata (Ju and Rogers, 1996). Although this fungus has a stromatal layer around each perithecium, other characters suggest its placement in section Hypoxylon. Like H. multiforme (Fr.: Fr.) Fr. and H. cohaerens (Pers.: Fr.) Fr. this species seems to represent an interface between these two sections (see Ju and Rogers, 1996). Unfortunately, cultures are not available.
