Stromata restricted-pulvinate or short cylindrical, discrete or densely aggregated, 0.8-6 mm diam x 1-2.5 mm high, attached to substrate with narrow connectives; surface dark brown to blackish brown, smooth or with fine cracks on top, with fine vertical striations on sides; carbonaceous immediately beneath surface; tissue between and beneath perithecia coriaceous to woody, white to gray, becoming dark brown and disintegrating.

Perithecia spherical, 0.5-0.9 mm diam.

Ostioles finely papillate.

Asci 230-270 mm total length x 9-12 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 160-190 mm long, the stipes 60-90 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, urn-shaped, 5.5-7 mm high x 3-4 mm broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, fusoid or ellipsoid, inequilateral, with narrowly or, less frequently, broadly rounded ends, smooth, 27-36 x (6-)7-9.5 mm, with straight germ slit much less than spore-length.
