Stromata with convex, obconical fertile parts 1-2.5 mm diam, usually containing one or two perithecia, densely aggregated or fused into composite structure, bearing one to several spines on top, tapering downwards into narrow connectives or radiating, strap-like stipes; surface dull blackish brown, usually with slight reticulate cracks; carbonaceous immediately beneath surface; tissue between and beneath perithecia coriaceous to woody, white to gray, becoming dark brown and disintegrating.

Perithecia spherical to obovate, 0.7-1.8 mm diam x 1.2-2 mm high.

Ostioles sharply conical.

Asci fragmentary, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, urn-shaped, 7-8 mm high x 5 mm broad.

Ascospores dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly to broadly rounded ends, smooth, 30-40 x 8-12(-13.5) mm, with straight germ slit slightly less than spore-length.
