NOTES

Kretzschmaria milleri is equivalent to Miller's interpretation of Hypoxylon pavimentosum and is characterized with coarsely papillate ostiolar openings (Miller, 1961). It differs from K. deusta mainly in having larger ascal apical rings, in having larger ascospores, and in having a longer ascospore germ slit; and differs from K. pavimentosa in usually having stromata with sloped margins, in having coarsely papillate ostiolar openings, in having larger ascal apical rings, and in having a nearly spore-length ascospore germ slit. The ascospore morphology of K. milleri in general agrees with that of K. sandvicensis from which the former species differs primarily in having coarsely papillate ostiolar openings and in having larger ascal apical rings.

A collection from Guyana [Cuyuni-Mazaruni Region, Mazaruni Subregion, along Koatse R., 3.III.1987, Samuels, G. J. et al. 4795, wood (JDR; NY)] probably belongs here but has larger ascospores, 50-58 x 13-17.5 mm, and larger ascal apical rings, 15-17 mm high x 8-12 mm broad, than the above-cited specimens. It probably represents a large-spored variant of K. milleri.
