NOTES

The ascospore ends are frequently pinched. The stromatal surface has conspicuous perithecial mounds which can be up to 1/3 exposed. Nemania carbonacea can be confused with N. diffusa which also has dark ascospores and nearly spore-length ascospore germ slits. However, Nemania carbonacea has white, soft stromatal tissue between the perithecia, whereas N. diffusa has carbonaceous stromatal tissue. In addition, pinched ascospores are not as frequently found in N. diffusa as in N. carbonacea.
