Nemania caries (Schwein.) Y.-M. Ju & J. D. Rogers, Nova Hedwigia 74: 90 (2002).

º Sphaeria caries Schwein., Trans. Amer. Philos. Soc., N. Ser., 4: 194 (1832).

º Hypoxylon caries (Schwein.) Sacc., Syll. Fung. 1: 393 (1882).

See Miller (1961)[as Hypoxylon caries] for a description of the teleomorph. The following is given as a supplement to Miller's description:

Stromata carbonaceous immediately beneath the surface; whitish, soft tissue between the perithecia; tissue beneath the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia obovoid, 0.3-0.6 mm diam x 0.5-0.7 mm high.

Ostioles slightly higher than the stromatal surface, with openings slightly papillate.

Asci with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, inverted hat-shaped, 2.5 µm high x 2.5 µm broad.

Ascospores light brown, unicellular, cylindrical, nearly equilateral, with broadly rounded ends, (9-)10-13(-14) x 4-5 µm, with straight, obscure germ slit 1/4 to 1/3 spore-length.
