NOTES

The possession of a dark purplish brown subiculum covering the margins of stromata is peculiar among the Nemania taxa. Miller (1934) first considered Hypoxylon rubigineoareolatum Rehm to be a synonym of H. latissimum. However, Miller (1961) became uncertain about using the name H. latissimum because he considered the isotypes at BPI and K containing different fungi: the part at BPI being Hypoxylon rubigineoareolatum Rehm and the part at K nearer H. mediterraneum (De Not.) J. H. Miller [º Biscogniauxia mediterranea (De Not.) Kuntze]. Miller (1961) thus adopted H. rubigineoareolatum in place of H. latissimum. Nevertheless, the isotypes at BPI and K of H. latissimum are in fact duplicates of the LPS holotype and clearly represent the same fungus. Nemania latissima differs from H. rubigineoareolatum in having subicular hyphae, in lacking KOH-extractable stromatal pigments, and in having a high ascal apical ring, coarsely papillate ostioles, larger ascospores lacking a dehiscent ascospore perispore, and ascospore germ slits much less than spore-length.
