NOTES

Petrini & Müller (1986) mentioned that the ascal apical ring of Hypoxylon serpens sensu stricto only stains blue after pretreatment with KOH. Granmo et al. (1999) defined N. serpens as having a dextrinoid ascal apical ring and in having relatively larger perithecia than the other taxa in the complex. In addition, they designated a Norwegian collection as the neotype of N. serpens. The Persoon specimen at L, no. 910, 269-703, has often been considered by various mycologists (Miller 1961, Petrini & Müller 1986, Petrini & Rogers 1986, Pouzar 1985b) as the type material of Sphaeria serpens. Unfortunately, this specimen was not located at the Persoon herbarium any more (pers. comm. Dr Peter Audiffred of L). According to Granmo et al. (1999), this material was rather poor. We have seen several other specimens labelled by Persoon as Sphaeria serpens or related to this name from L: no. 910,269-713 is N. diffusa; nos. 910,269-814 and 910,269-885 are H. vogesiacum (Pers.) Sacc.; no. 910,269-886 is probably N. aenea var. aureolutea; no. 910,269-815 is a depauperate Hypoxylon; no. 910,269-817 is a diatrypaceous fungus; and no. 910,269-887 is N. serpens var. colliculosa.
