Stromata effused-pulvinate, superficial, 0.5-4 cm long, 0.4-1.2 cm broad, 0.7-0.9 mm thick; surface blackish with copper-brown tinge, with inconspicuous perithecial mounds, smooth; carbonaceous tissue immediately beneath surface; whitish, soft tissue between perithecia; tissue beneath the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia spherical, 0.5-0.6 mm diam, sometimes with carbonaceous stromatal layer discretely enclosing each perithecium.

Ostioles slightly higher than the stromatal surface, with openings slightly papillate.

Asci 110-130 µm total length x 6.5-8 µm broad, the spore-bearing parts 85-95 µm long, the stipes 20-35 µm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, urn-shaped, 3.5-4.5 µm high x 2.5-3 µm broad.

Ascospores light brown, unicellular, ellipsoidal-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 14-17.5 x 6-7.5 µm with straight, conspicuous germ slit 1/3 to 1/4 spore-length on the dorsal side.
