NOTES

The ascospore morphology resembles that of K. guyanensis. We were unable to locate the type of Hypoxylon macrospermum which is a Leprieur collection from Guyana. We thus select a neotype for it. Neither could we locate the type material of H. gigaspermum from Java, Indonesia. Hennings' description (in Saccardo, 1902) leaves little doubt that H. gigaspermum is a synonym of K. macrosperma.

Miller (1961) recognized H. fragaria and H. nucigenum as distinct species but suspected that "they could be combined if more specimens were available for study." Specimens referred to these taxa often feature unaggregated stromata bearing one or few perithecia. One collection collection [MEXICO: Tamaulipas State, Gómez Farías Municipality, Malacate, 31.III.1988, Baldazo 216, wood (ITCV; JDR)] shows abuncant coremia associated with the stromata. Kretzschmaria macrosperma appears to have affinities with Stilbohypoxylon and, indeed, could probably be accommodated in that genus.
