Stromata spherical, depressed-spherical, hemispherical, or applanopulvinate, discrete or densely aggregated, 0.4-5 cm diam x 0.5-3 cm high, attached to substrate with narrow connectives or short stipes; surface dull ochraceous brown, dark brown to blackish brown, cracked into distinctive polygonal scales; carbonaceous immediately beneath surface; tissue between and beneath perithecia coriaceous to woody, white to gray, becoming dark brown and disintegrating.
Perithecia spherical to obovoid, 2.5-4(-5) mm diam x 2.5-5.5 mm high.
Ostioles obtusely conical.
Asci fragmentary, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, urn-shaped, 9-12 mm high x 6-8 mm broad.
Ascospores blackish brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with broadly or, infrequently, narrowly rounded ends, smooth, 45-67 x 12.5-17.5(-20) mm, with straight germ slit spore-length or nearly so.
