NOTES
This fungus is known from Spegazzini's specimens from Argentina which were collected from Nothofagus. The thick carbonaceous layer immediately beneath the stromatal surface is characteristic of N. creoleuca; most Nemania taxa have a carbonaceous layer less than 0.1 mm thick. The type of Hypoxylon diatrypelloides has diatrypoid stromata with margins still attached with the epidermal tissue of the host; this, however, does not occur in the type of H. creoleucum. Hypoxylon creoleucum and H. diatrypelloides were described in the same publication. We choose H. creoleucum as the basionym for the fungus because its type material is in a better condition.
