Stromata pulvinate to effused-pulvinate, superficial or erumpent-superficial, 3-20 mm long, 1-8 mm broad, 1-1.3 mm thick; surface blackish brown, plane or with inconspicuous perithecial mounds, smooth or with major reticulate cracks; carbonaceous tissue immediately beneath surface ca. 0.2 mm thick; whitish, soft tissue between perithecia; tissue beneath the perithecial layer inconspicuous.
Perithecia spherical to obovoid, 0.7-1 mm diam x 0.8-1.2 mm high, sometimes with carbonaceous stromatal layer discretely enclosing each perithecium when aged.
Ostioles higher than the stromatal surface, with openings papillate, occasionally encircled with a small faint disc area.
Asci fragmentary, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, inverted hat-shaped, 2.5-3 µm high x 2.5-3 µm broad.
Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoidal-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 14-17.5 x 6-7.5 µm, with straight, conspicuous germ slit slightly less than spore-length on the ventral side.
