Stromata peltate, with convex top, usually confluent, with inconspicuous perithecial mounds, 0.4-1.7 cm diam x 2-6 mm thick; surface dark brick (60), sepia (63), becoming blackish; blackish granules immediately beneath surface, with KOH-extractable pigments livid red (56), vinaceous (57), brick (59), or bay (6); the tissue below the perithecial layer massive, blackish.
Perithecia spherical to obovoid, 0.3-0.4 mm diam x 0.3-0.7 mm high.
Ostioles papillate to conical-papillate.
Asci 125-158 mm total length x 4-4.5 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 56-74 mm long, the stipes 65-87 mm long, with apical ring bluing or not bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 1-1.5 mm high x 2 mm broad.
Ascospores light brown to brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 6.5-7.5 (-8) x 3-4 mm, with straight germ slit less than spore-length; perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH, smooth; epispore smooth.
