NOTES

Two specimens were listed in the protologue of H. discophorum, but only no. 786 was sent on request of type specimens from PAD. Thus, no. 786 is designated as the lectotype. We have not seen the type of H. macroannulatum, but suspect that it is a synonym of H. discophorum. Hypoxylon macroannulatum was recently applied to a Papua New Guinea fungus by Van der Gucht and Van der Veken (1992). Hypoxylon discophorum was listed by Miller (1961) as a synonym of H. bovei Speg. from which it differs in having stromatal pigments consistently extracted with 10% KOH, in having larger ostiolar discs, and in having a spore-length germ slit.
