TELEOMORPH

Hypoxylon hians Berk. & Cooke apud Cooke, Grevillea 11: 129. 1883.

Stromata hemispherical, with conspicuous perithecial mounds, 1-2.5 cm diam x 0.6-1 cm thick; surface blackish; blackish granules immediately beneath surface forming a crust 0.4-0.5 mm thick, without apparent KOH-extractable pigments; the tissue below the perithecial layer massive, dark brown.

Perithecia obovoid, 1.5-2.3 mm diam x 2-3 mm high.

Ostioles papillate, encircled with a strongly concave disc 0.4-0.7 mm diam x 0.2-0.5 mm deep, with the rim 0.5-0.8 mm elevated above the stromatal surface.

Asci not observed.

Ascospores dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, slightly laterally compressed, with broadly rounded ends, (7.5-) 8-10 x 4-6 mm, with straight germ slit spore-length; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore smooth.
