Stromata glomerate, pulvinate, hemispherical, or effused-pulvinate, usually confluent, with perithecial mounds inconspicuous to 1/3 exposed, 0.3-3 cm diam x (0.7-) 1-2 mm thick; surface blackish with olivaceous tones; blackish granules immediately beneath surface, with KOH-extractable pigments greenish olivaceous (90) or dull green (70); the tissue below the perithecial layer conspicuous, blackish, up to 1 mm thick.
Perithecia spherical, 0.4-0.8 mm diam.
Ostioles papillate, encircled with a truncatum-type disc 0.2-0.4 mm diam.
Asci 75-140 mm total length x 3.5-5 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 55-75 mm long, the stipes (15-) 20-70 mm long, with apical ring bluing or not bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.5-1 mm high x 1.5-2 mm broad.
Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly to broadly rounded ends, 6-9 x 2.5-4 mm, with straight germ slit spore-length; perispore of at least some spores dehiscent in 10% KOH, smooth; epispore smooth.
