NOTES

Hypoxylon nitens differs from H. truncatum in having a bovei-type ostiolar disc and in having stromata frequently widely effused-pulvinate. A striking feature of H. nitens is that the upper 1/4-1/3 of perithecial mounds are not covered by the outermost stromatal layer or are thinly covered by fragments of the outermost stromatal layer. At maturity, the stroma is shiny black. Hypoxylon purpureonitens differs from H. nitens primarily in having purplish KOH-extractable pigments.
