Stromata applanate, 2-50(+) cm long x 2-25(+) cm broad x 0.4-0.7 mm thick; outer dehiscing layer white, becoming blackish, thin; mature surface white, with black ostioles, eventually becoming almost entirely black; carbonaceous immediately beneath surface and between perithecia; tissue beneath perithecia inconspicuous.

Perithecia obovoid, 0.2-0.3 mm diam x 0.3-0.5 mm high.

Ostioles slightly higher than the stromatal surface, with openings papillate.

Asci 150-170 mm total length x 16-18 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 140-155 mm long, the stipes 10-20 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 4-5.5 mm high x 7-8 mm broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid, nearly equilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, smooth, (20-) 23-30 x 11.5-14.5 mm, with straight germ slit spore-length.
