Stromata applanate, 0.8-3 cm long x 0.4-1.1 cm broad x 0.6-0.8 mm thick; outer dehiscing layer dark brown, thin; mature surface dark gray to blackish brown; carbonaceous immediately beneath surface; tissue between perithecia fibrous to woody, gray, becoming dark brown; tissue beneath perithecia inconspicuous.

Perithecia obovoid, 0.3-0.4 mm diam x 0.5-0.6 mm high.

Ostioles lower than stromatal surface, with openings punctate.

Asci 180-200 mm total length x 11-13 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 145-160 mm long, the stipes 25-35 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 2.5-3.5 mm high x 5.5-7 mm broad.

Ascospores dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid, equilateral to slightly inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, smooth, 17.5-22 (-25) x (8-) 9-11 (-12) mm, with straight germ slit spore-length.
