Stromata applanate, 0.5-6 cm long x 0.5-4 cm broad x 0.5-0.6 mm thick; outer dehiscing layer dark brown, thin; mature surface black; carbonaceous immediately beneath surface and between perithecia; tissue beneath perithecia inconspicuous.
Perithecia tubular, ca. 0.05 (-0.1) mm diam x 0.3-0.5 mm high, with numerous individuals arranged in rosettes and discharging through a single ostiolar canal.
Ostioles slightly lower than to slightly higher than stromatal surface, with openings punctate or slightly papillate.
Asci 90-115 mm total length x 8-9 mm broad, the spore-bearing part 80-95 mm long, the stipes 10-20 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 1-2 mm high x 2.5 mm broad.
Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid, nearly equilateral, with narrowly to, less frequently, broadly rounded ends, smooth, 11-14 x 5.5-7.5 mm, with straight germ slit spore-length.
