NOTES

We erect a nomen novum for Schweinitz's S. macula because it is a later homonym of Tode's species. Tode's S. macula was listed as a synonym of Hypoxylon serpens (Pers.: Fr.) J. Kickx fil. by Miller (1961). We were unable to locate type material of S. macula Schwein. at PH. At the Curtis herbarium of FH, a Schweinitz specimen labelled under this name was found; no detailed collecting data were given to it. It is a Nemania species. There is another Schweinitz specimen at K; this is selected as the lectotype because it reflects the current concept of this name (e.g., Miller, 1961; Van der Gucht, 1992). The lectotype has an ascospore morpholgy highly similar to that of B. querna except for having a smaller size range. Biscogniauxia schweinitzii differs from B. querna also in having punctate ostiolar openings. Miller (1961) gave the ascospore size range as 12-17 x 9-13 mm. Van der Gucht (1992, 1995) recently redescribed this fungus from Papua New Guinea and gave the ascospore size range as 13.5-15 x 8.5-11.5 mm.
