Stromata erumpent, pulvinate, raised, 0.2-1.3 cm long x 0.2-0.5 cm broad x 0.6-1 mm thick, with sloped margins; mature surface black; carbonaceous immediately beneath surface and between perithecia; tissue beneath perithecia inconspicuous.
Perithecia obovoid, 0.3-0.5 mm diam x 0.4-0.7 mm high.
Ostioles lower than stromatal surface, with openings punctate, sometimes overlain with white substance.
Asci 105-130 mm total length x 12-13 mm broad, the spore-bearing part 90-115 mm long, the stipes 15-25 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 1.5-2 mm high x 5.5-6 mm broad.
Ascospores dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid to subglobose, nearly equilateral, laterally compressed, with broadly rounded ends, smooth, 13-14.5 x 8.5-11.5 x 7-7.5 mm, with straight germ slit spore-length on both narrow edges.
