Stromata turbinate to placentiform, sessile or with short, stout stipe, solitary to infrequently aggregated, smooth, 1.5-6 cm diam x 1-4 cm high; surface brown vinaceous (84), dark brick (60), sepia (63), grayish sepia (106), or vinaceous gray (116), blackened and varnished in age; dull reddish brown granules immediately beneath surface, with KOH-extractable pigments livid purple (81), dark livid (80), or vinaceous purple (101), or without apparent KOH-extractable pigments; the tissue between perithecia brown, pithy to woody; the tissue below the perithecial layer composed of alternating zones, the darker zones dark brown, pithy to woody, 0.2-0.4 mm thick, the lighter zones white, gray, or grayish brown, gelatinous and very hard when dry, becoming pithy to woody, persistent, 0.4-1 mm thick.

Perithecia tubular, 0.3-0.4 mm diam x 1-1.5 mm high.

Ostioles obsolete or slightly papillate.

Asci 160-195 mm total length x 7-9 mm broad, the spore-bearing part 70-80 mm long, the stipe 90-120 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.5 mm high x 2-2.5 mm broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 10-14 (-15.5) x 5-6.5 mm, with straight germ slit spore-length on convex side; perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH, smooth; epispore smooth.
