TELEOMORPH

Hypoxylon brevirimum Y.-M. Ju & J. D. Rogers, A Revision of the Genus Hypoxylon, p. 92. 1996.

Stromata glomerate, with conspicuous perithecial mounds, 0.7-1.5 mm diam x 0.4-0.5 mm thick; surface chestnut (40), becoming black; dark brown granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, without apparent KOH-extractable pigments; the tissue below the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia spherical, 0.3 mm diam.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 110-140 mm total length x 9-12 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 100-110 mm long, the stipes 15-25 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 1.5 mm high x 3.5-4 mm broad.

Ascospores dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 14-18 (-20) x (6.5-) 7.5-8.5 (-9) mm, with straight germ slit much less than spore-length on the flattened side; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore with dotted band along germ slit.
