TELEOMORPH

Hypoxylon brevisporum Y.-M. Ju & J. D. Rogers, A Revision of the Genus Hypoxylon, p. 92. 1996.

Stromata effused-pulvinate, plane or with inconspicuous to conspicuous perithecial mounds, 0.5-1 mm thick; surface brown vinaceous (84); dark brown or black granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments olivaceous gray (12), greenish olivaceous (90), or gray olivaceous (107); the tissue below the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia obovoid to tubular, 0.2 mm diam x 0.3-0.7 mm high.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 73-104 mm total length x 3.5-5.5 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 38-50 mm long, the stipes 30-55 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.2-0.4 mm high x 1.2-1.5 mm broad.

Ascospores light brown to brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 5.5-8 x 2.5-3.5 mm, with straight germ slit spore-length; perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH, smooth; epispore smooth.
