Hypoxylon californicum Ellis & Everh.

NOTES

Hypoxylon californicum is characterized by having ascospores with striations at least superficially like those of Neurospora. Other taxa in Hypoxylon known to possess faint striations on the epispore of some, but not all, collections are H. aeruginosum, H. ochraceum, H. subrutilum, and H. vogesiacum. However, the ornamentation in these latter taxa is so faint that one can barely see it by light microscopy; their ascospores are considered smooth herein. Species with the striations do not seem to be closely related. The ornamentation on the ascospore epispore may be a neutral feature in that it can be found in different lineages of fungi, e.g., Sordariaceae and Xylariaceae.
