TELEOMORPH

Hypoxylon californicum Ellis & Everh. emend. Y.-M. Ju & J. D. Rogers, Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia 1895: 426. 1895.

Stromata pulvinate, plane, 6-12 mm diam x 1.2-1.5 mm thick; surface umber (9); dark brown granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments amber (47); the tissue below the perithecial layer dark brown, 0.8-1.1 mm thick.

Perithecia obovoid, 0.2-0.3 mm diam x 0.4 mm high.

Ostioles at the same level as or slightly higher than the stromatal surface.

Asci 180-195 mm total length x 9-11 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 108-120 mm long, the stipes 63-81 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 1-1.5 mm high x 3.8-4.5 mm broad.

Ascospores dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid to fusoid, inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, infrequently with one or both ends pinched, 17-20.5 x 6.5-7.5 mm, with straight germ slit spore-length; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore conspicuously striate.
