The cited material is scanty but possesses sufficient characteristics to be recognized as a distinct taxon. The ascospore morphology is similar to that of H. megalosporum Speg. and H. umbilicatum Speg.

Miller (1961) placed H. chionostomum into synonymy with H. quisquiliarum (Mont.) Mont. These two fungi are not closely related but were considered to be synonymous by Miller (1961), probably owing to their somewhat similar ascospore sizes.
