NOTES

Miller (1961) treated H. dieckmannii as a variety of H. rubiginosum. On the other hand, Martin (1969a) and Van der Gucht and Van der Veken (1992) recognized H. dieckmannii and H. rubiginosum as distinct species because of the differences in ascospores and anamorphs. Our studies support the decision of Martin (1969a) and Van der Gucht and Van der Veken (1992). However, the anamorph of H. dieckmannii that we obtained is quite different from that reported by Martin (1969a) which, in fact, resembles the anamorphic H. investiens.

Hypoxylon dieckmannii is easily confused with H. investiens because of the similarity in stromatal surface colors and in ascospore morphology. Hypoxylon dieckmannii has small perithecia, no apparent KOH-extractable pigments or dilute grayish sepia (106) pigments, and a Sporothrix-like conidiogenous structure; H. investiens has larger perithecia, greenish KOH-extractable pigments, and a Periconiella-like conidiogenous structure. Also compare with H. hughesii.
