º Hypoxylon rubiginosum (Pers.: Fr.) Fr. var. dieckmannii (Theiss.) J. H. Miller, Monogr. of the World Species of Hypoxylon, p. 33. 1961.

Stromata effused-pulvinate, plane or with inconspicuous perithecial mounds, 3-50 mm long x 2-20 mm broad x 0.6-0.8 (-1) mm thick; surface brown vinaceous (84), sepia (63), or chestnut (40); dark brown to black granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, without apparent KOH-extractable pigments or with dilute grayish sepia (106) to blackish pigments; the tissue below the perithecial layer black, inconspicuous or up to 0.5 mm thick.

Perithecia obovoid, 0.1-0.3 mm diam x 0.2-0.4 mm high.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 110-140 mm total length x 4.5-6.5 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 60-72 mm long, the stipes 40-76 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.5-0.8 mm high x 1.5-2 mm broad.

Ascospores light brown to brown, unicellular, ellipsoid, nearly equilateral, with broadly to less frequently narrowly rounded ends, 6.5-10 (-11) x (3-) 3.5-4 mm, with straight, faint germ slit slightly less than spore-length to nearly spore-length; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore smooth.
