º Hypoxylon rubiginosum (Pers.: Fr.) Fr. var. ferrugineum (Otth) J. H. Miller, Monogr. of the World Species of Hypoxylon, p. 32. 1961.
Stromata restrictedly pulvinate, erumpent, usually slightly constricted at base, with inconspicuous perithecial mounds, 1-5 mm diam x 0.8-2 mm thick; surface dark brick (60) or hazel (88); rusty brown or ochraceous brown granules immediately beneath surface, with KOH-extractable pigments orange (7); the tissue below the perithecial layer whitish first, becoming dark brown, woody, 0.4-1.5 mm thick, extending into the space between perithecia.
Perithecia obovoid, 0.2-0.4 mm diam x 0.3-0.5 mm high.
Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.
Asci 130-170 mm total length x 8-12 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 85-120 mm long, the stipes 35-67 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.5 mm high x 2.7-3.4 mm broad.
Ascospores dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral,
with narrowly rounded ends, infrequently with one or two ends
pinched, (13.5-) 14-17 x 6.5-8 (-8.5) mm,
with straight germ slit spore-length; perispore dehiscent in 10%
KOH, with inconspicuous coil-like ornamentation; epispore smooth.
