NOTES

Four specimens at the Persoon herbarium of L were labeled as Sphaeria fragiformis Pers. Specimen 910, 267-643 is H. howeianum. Specimen 910, 267-646, which now has few ascospores, was selected as the type by Petrini and Müller (1986). The other two specimens, 910, 267-640 and 910, 267-652, are sterile. There are two packets labeled as Sphaeria enteromela at PH. One packet, containing material identical to H. fragiforme, was collected from Goshen, Indiana-the original location cited in the protologue; this is considered to be the holotype. The other packet, containing immature stromata of two fungi, a Hypoxylon species and an Endothia species, was collected from "Salem & Bethlehem" [Syn. 1177, Collins Coll. 12 (PH)]. Five specimens related to H. argillaceum (Fr.: Fr.) J. Kickx fil. were examined from UPS. Three specimens were labeled as Sphaeria argillacea. One of these [Dufour, L. 584 (UPS 59181)] does not have the authority following the binomial; it contains two Hypoxylon: H. fuscum and H. perforatum. Two other specimens have Persoon as the authority. One [Dufour, L. 585 (UPS 59184)] is immature; it is either H. fragiforme or H. howeianum. The other [ex Herb. M. J. Berkeley (UPS 57212)] is H. intermedium. Two specimens were labeled as "Hypoxylon argillaceum". One [SWEDEN: Scania, Sovestad par., Krageholm, wood of Fagus (UPS)] without the authority is H. fragiforme; this was considered to be the type by Petrini and Müller (1986). The other [SWEDEN: Scania, wood of Carpinus (UPS)] with Fries as the authority is Melogramma campylosporum Fr. Three specimens labeled by Fries as H. cupreum have been examined. Specimen no. 47 [SWEDEN: Smċland, Femsj? Fries, E. (UPS)] is a mixture. Four pieces were mounted on the card board; the upper right and the lower left are H. rubiginosum; the upper left and the lower right are H. fuscum. Specimen no. 60 [SWEDEN: Östergötland, Fries, E. (UPS)] is M. campylosporum. Specimen no. 59 contains only one fungus, which eliminates the ambiguity in interpreting this name. Accordingly, this is selected as the lectotype of H. cupreum.

Hypoxylon fragiforme and H. howeianum are the only two taxa characterized by having two colors of granules: orange red granules immediately beneath the stromatal surface and white granules between perithecia. These two taxa mainly differ in their ascospore size ranges and in the broader geographical and host range of the latter. See also H. commutatum.
