Stromata hemispherical to spherical, sessile or nearly so, with conspicuous perithecial mounds, 2-13 mm diam x 1.5-6 mm thick; surface rust (39), bay (6), or dark brick (60); orange-red granules immediately beneath surface, with KOH-extractable pigments orange (7); white granules between perithecia; the tissue below the perithecial layer black, up to 5.5 mm thick.

Perithecia obovoid, 0.2-0.4 mm diam x 0.5-0.6 mm high.

Ostioles lower than or at the same level as the stromatal surface.

Asci 155-175 mm total length x 6.3-8 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 80-90 mm long, the stipes 70-90 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.8-1.2 mm high x 2.2-2.8 mm broad.

Ascospores dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, (10.5-) 11-15 x 5-6.5 (-7) mm, with germ slit spore-length; perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH, smooth; epispore smooth.
