Hypoxylon hypomiltum Mont., Ann. Sci. Nat. Bot., sér. II, 13: 356. 1840.

Stromata effused-pulvinate, plane or with inconspicuous perithecial mounds, 0.7-5.5 cm long x 0.3-2 cm broad x 0.6-1 mm thick; surface brown vinaceous (84), dark brick (60), or sepia (63); dull rusty brown granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments luteous (12) from young stromata of some collections but amber (47), honey (64), or citrine (13) from mature stromata; the tissue below the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia obovoid to tubular, (0.2-) 0.3-0.5 mm diam x 0.5-0.7 mm high.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 90-132 (-145) mm total length x 4.5-6 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 45-62 (-66) mm long, the stipes 36-80 (-90) mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, flattened discoid, 0.3-0.6 mm high x 1.2-1.5 mm broad.

Ascospores light brown to brown, unicellular, shortly fusoid, nearly equilateral, with nearly acute ends, (6.5-) 7-9 x 3-4 mm, with slightly oblique to sigmoid germ slit less than spore-length to, less frequently, nearly spore-length; perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH, smooth; epispore smooth.
