TELEOMORPH

Hypoxylon macrocarpum Pouzar, Ceská Mykol. 32: 19. 1978.

Stromata effused-pulvinate, with inconspicuous to conspicuous perithecial mounds, up to 10 cm long x 4 cm broad x (0.5-) 0.8-1.2 mm thick; surface brown vinaceous (84), fawn (87), or dark brick (60); dark reddish brown or dark brown granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments isabelline (65), umber (9), or grayish sepia (106); the tissue below the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia obovoid to tubular, 0.3-0.6 mm diam x 0.6-0.9 mm high.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface, inconspicuous, sometimes on flattened area.

Asci 140-182 mm total length x 6-8 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 67-80 mm long, the stipes 70-112 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 1 mm high x 2-2.5 mm broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 9-12.5 (-13) x 4-5.5 mm, with straight germ slit spore-length; perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH, smooth; epispore smooth.
