Hypoxylon novemexicanum J. H. Miller, Monogr. of the World Species of Hypoxylon, p. 57. 1961.

Stromata pulvinate to effused-pulvinate, plane or with inconspicuous to conspicuous perithecial mounds, 0.4-2 cm long x 0.4-1 cm broad x 0.4-0.7 mm thick; surface white; orange or dull orange granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments orange (7); the tissue below the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia spherical to obovoid, 0.2-0.4 (-0.5) mm diam x 0.2-0.5 mm high.

Ostioles slightly higher than the stromatal surface.

Asci 140-170 mm total length x 8-11 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 100-117 mm long, the stipes 27-60 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 1.5-2 mm high x 3-4 mm broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, (14-) 15-19 (-20) x 5.5-8 mm, with straight germ slit spore-length; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore smooth.
