Stromata hemispherical, pulvinate to effused-pulvinate, with inconspicuous to conspicuous perithecial mounds, 1-25 mm long x 1-10 mm broad x 0.5-1 (-1.5) mm thick; surface dark brick (60), grayish sepia (106), brown vinaceous (84), or umber (9); dark brown or blackish granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments amber (47) with greenish yellow (16) tone, or greenish yellow (16) with citrine (13) tone; the tissue below the perithecial layer dark brown to blackish, inconspicuous or up to 1 mm thick.
Perithecia spherical, 0.1-0.3 mm diam.
Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface, usually overlain with conspicuous white substance.
Asci 80-130 mm total length x 5.5-9 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 54-82 mm long, the stipes 19-50 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.5-1.8 mm high x 2-2.8 mm broad.
Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, (8-) 9-12 (-13) x 4-6 mm, with straight to slightly sigmoid germ slit spore-length; perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH, smooth or with inconspicuous coil-like ornamentation; epispore smooth.
