NOTES

Most stromata in the type specimen have disappeared and only the bases of peripheral stromata remain. It is the only taxon in section Hypoxylon having strongly laterally compressed ascospores. The ascospore morphology is strikingly similar to that of Pulveria porrecta Malloch & C. T. Rogerson [CANADA: Ontario, Carleton Co., 2.4 km NW of Bell's Corners, 27.9.1974, Malloch, D, wood of Acer saccharum (JDR ex TRTC 47274, ISOTYPE)]. Hypoxylon piceum may eventually be proven to be a Pulveria. However, owing to lack of most essential characteristics, including shape of asci, shape of ascomata, we temporarily include H. piceum in Hypoxylon. Ellis (1883) mistakenly cited Holway's specimen number as 287 in the protologue.
