TELEOMORPH

Hypoxylon pilgerianum Henn., Hedwigia 39: 138. 1900.

Stromata pulvinate to effused-pulvinate, with inconspicuous to conspicuous perithecial mounds, 0.2-6 cm long x 0.2-3 cm broad x 0.3-0.4 mm thick; surface chestnut (40), brown vinaceous (84), or dark vinaceous (82); dull orange brown or dull reddish brown granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments ochreous (44), honey (64), or amber (47); the tissue below the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia spherical, 0.1-0.3 mm diam.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 68-97 mm total length x 6.5-9 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 52-74 mm long, the stipes 16-23 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.5-1 mm high x 2.5 mm broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 8.5-12 (-13.5) x 4-5 (-5.5) mm, with straight germ slit spore-length; perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH, with inconspicuous coil-like ornamentation; epispore smooth.
