Hypoxylon rubellum Penz. & Sacc.

NOTES
This fungus is unique among Hypoxylon taxa in having pits on ascospores. The several collections of H. rubellum that we have examined are associated with monocots.
Miller (1961) suspected H. rubellum to be H. rubrostromaticum [= H. subrutilum]. Rogers et al. (1987) demonstrated that the ascospores are ornamented with shallow pits, and recognized H. rubellum as a distinct species.
