TELEOMORPH

Hypoxylon rubellum Penz. & Sacc. emend. J. D. Rogers, Callan, & Samuels, Malpighia 11: 491. 1897; Mycotaxon 29: 132. 1987.

Stromata pulvinate, with conspicuous perithecial mounds, 1-2 mm diam x 0.5-0.7 mm thick; surface brown vinaceous (84) or chestnut (40); orange red granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments luteous (12) or orange (7); the tissue below the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia spherical, 0.2-0.3 mm diam.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 125-140 mm total length x 9.5-10.5 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 115-125 mm long, the stipes 10-20 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.9-1.3 mm high x 3-3.5 mm broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, fusoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded to nearly acute ends, 16.5-21 x 7-8 (-8.5) mm, with straight germ slit spore-length; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore with shallow pits separated by reticulate rims.
