NOTES

Hypoxylon sclerophaeum as circumscribed by Miller (1961) included several taxa that we recognize in this study: H. nicaraguense, H. kretzschmarioides, H. placentiforme, H. polyporum, H. sclerophaeum, H. symphyon, and H. tortisporum. Hypoxylon sclerophaeum is characterized by its pulvinate to effused-pulvinate stromata with purplish pigments, by its lack of constriction at base of stromata, by its nearly equilateral, light brown to brown ascospores, and by its much less than spore-length germ slit. It seems to be a relatively rare fungus or, at least, infrequently collected.
