TELEOMORPH

Hypoxylon sclerophaeum Berk. & M. A. Curtis apud Berk., J. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia, ser. II, 2: 285. 1853.

Stromata pulvinate to effused-pulvinate, plane, 0.5-6 cm diam x 1.5-2.5 mm thick; surface sepia (63) or chestnut (40); dark reddish brown or blackish granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments livid violet (79), violaceous gray (113), or violet slate (99); the tissue below the perithecial layer black, 1-1.5 mm thick.

Perithecia tubular to long tubular, 0.2-0.3 mm diam x 0.6-1 mm high.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 146-180 mm total length x 7-8 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 81-105 mm long, the stipes 57-75 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.4-0.8 mm high x 2.5-3 mm broad.

Ascospores light brown to brown, unicellular, ellipsoid, nearly equilateral, with broadly rounded ends, sometimes with one or both ends narrowed, (10.5-) 11-16 x (4.5-) 5-6.5 mm, with straight germ slit much less than spore-length; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore smooth.
