NOTES

Both H. shearii and H. flavoargillaceum have buff or fawn stromatal surface. They differ in that H. shearii has highly reduced or no ascal apical ring, conspicuous coil-like ornamentation on the perispore, and strongly curved ascospores. Hypoxylon shearii seems to be consistently associated with Quercus. Also compare with H. notatum.
